This information is intended to address faculty absences from campus for non-professional reasons. As a general guideline, a faculty member is absent from campus if they miss a teaching assignment or other assigned duty that requires their physical presence on campus; or, if they travel to a location distant from campus.

1. For unplanned absences of up to 10 business days due to illness or another unpredicted situation, the faculty member must inform the department head. The department head should notify the Dean's Office of this absence (a brief email notification is sufficient).
2. For planned absences of up to 10 business days, the faculty member must secure the approval of the department head in advance of the absence. The department head should notify the Dean's Office of this absence (a brief email notification is sufficient).
3. For planned or unplanned absences of more than 10 business days, the faculty member must adhere to the [University’s Policy of Modified Duties for Faculty Due to Life Events](https://policy.uconn.edu/2023/12/19/modified-duties-for-faculty-due-to-life-events-policy-on/). The policy and accompanying procedures are available via the University’s Policy website.

These policies represent an implementation of the [memo dated July 13, 2015 from the Provost's Office.pdf](https://policy.uconn.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/243/2015/07/20150713-Faculty-Leaves-Directive.pdf), pursuant to Article XIII.L.5.b of the [University By-Laws](https://policy.uconn.edu/2011/05/17/by-laws-of-the-university-of-connecticut/):

"No member of the professional staff shall be absent from his/her duties at the University except by permission of the department head. Short leaves to cover emergency situations may be granted by the department head, who will make such arrangements as are feasible to re-assign the absent staff member's work. In each such case, the department head will file a record of the matter with the dean. No such emergency leave shall be granted for a longer period than ten days without previous permission of the president for those units which report to the president or by the provost or the appropriate vice president. "

Faculty members who will be absent from campus during the regular academic year for professional reasons must obtain permission from the department head in advance for such activities. Note, faculty travel requires preauthorization through the [Concur Travel and Expense Management system](https://travel.uconn.edu/). This preauthorization will constitute department head permission. Faculty on sabbatical or official paid or unpaid leaves do not require separate authorization.
