The College encourages faculty to pursue competitive fellowships consistent with its research missions. Levels and types of fellowship funding may vary across disciplines and funding agencies. These fellowships often will come from external sources and provide funding for academic year salary and fringe benefits. In some of these cases, the faculty member may take a full or partial leave from UConn during the period of the fellowship to pursue the research that it funds. In limited situations and for the most highly prestigious external fellowships, CLAS will consider providing financial support for the faculty member in an amount up to their regular salary.

A few fellowships are also provided via mechanisms internal to UConn, such as those from the Humanities Institute (UCHI). In these cases, faculty members are not on leave, and instead are provided with course releases to focus on their scholarship while remaining on campus.

In all cases, details related to expectations, as well as financial and human resource considerations, must be agreed upon among the faculty member and department head, with approval from the dean prior to applying for the fellowship. Course releases are the responsibility of the department.

Faculty members who are applying for fellowships should [fill out this form](http://s.uconn.edu/clasfellowship).

After completing a fellowship leave, faculty must submit a detailed report on activities and accomplishments within the first two months of the semester in which the faculty returns. The Kuali Build reporting form “CLAS Fellowship Report” will be sent to the faculty member by the Dean’s Office at the beginning of the semester in which the faculty member returns. The report requires the following information:

- Description of main activities carried out during the fellowship leave.
- Description of how the research leave benefited the Department/College and University overall.
- Explanation of how the fellowship altered and/or advanced the faculty’s research trajectory.
- List of all written works published, in progress, or submitted.

The completed report will be sent to the faculty member, the department head or unit director, and the Dean’s Office.
