The CLAS Office of Communications, Dean’s Office, and University Communications work together to help departments and units communicate appropriately during crises and emergencies. The team can advise on reporting requirements, coordinate messaging, and help ensure communications are timely, accurate, and aligned with University guidance.

**Before communicating about an incident with faculty, staff, students, the media, or the public, please contact the CLAS Director of Communications or your associate dean for guidance.**

## Media and Mass Communication Policy

University Communications is responsible for official University statements and responses to the media. Faculty, staff, departments, and other organizational units should not issue official statements on behalf of the University through the media or on University-managed websites or social media channels.

Review the University’s [Media and Mass Communication Policy](https://policy.uconn.edu/2017/05/17/communication-with-external-media-policy-on/) to understand communication expectations and responsibilities.

**All requests for an official University statement or media response should be directed to the University spokesperson in University Communications.**

If you receive a media inquiry or are unsure how to respond, [contact the CLAS Director of Communications](https://clas.uconn.edu/about/directory/?group=Dean%E2%80%99s%20Office&tag=Communications) or your associate dean.

## Internal Communications

Need to share urgent information with your department or unit? The CLAS Office of Communications can help you develop timely messages, coordinate communications with University offices, and determine the most appropriate communication channels.

For help, contact the CLAS Director of Communications or your associate dean.

## Internal Crisis and Emergency Communications Protocol

Department heads and unit leaders should follow the College’s internal crisis and emergency communications protocol, which outlines communication responsibilities, reporting procedures, and key contacts during an emergency.

[View the Internal Crisis and Emergency Communications Protocol](https://s.uconn.edu/clascrisiscommunications) (accessible only to members of the CLAS Heads, Directors, and Coordinators SharePoint).
