The University of Connecticut establishes the policies and procedures for promotion, tenure, and reappointment (PTR). The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides additional guidance for tenure-track, clinical, and in-residence faculty, while academic departments define the criteria used to evaluate faculty for promotion and tenure.

Faculty should become familiar with the expectations at the department, College, and University levels and consult their department head with questions about the review process.

## Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty

Tenure-track faculty participate in an annual review process and submit updated dossiers through Interfolio in accordance with the [Provost's PTR guidelines](https://academicaffairs.uconn.edu/policies-procedures/promotion-tenure-reappointment/).

Faculty receive a comprehensive midpoint review during their third year and are considered for tenure according to the timeline established in their appointment letter, unless modified by an approved tenure clock extension.

Promotion to professor is initiated by the faculty member and follows University, College, and department criteria.

Faculty planning to seek tenure or promotion should consult with their department head during the spring semester before submitting their dossier to discuss the review process and external evaluation letters.

See the Provost's PTR website and CLAS guidance for current requirements and review procedures:

## Clinical and In-Residence Faculty

Clinical, in-residence, and extension (CIRE) faculty participate in annual performance reviews and reappointment. Faculty seeking promotion must meet their department's promotion criteria and follow the procedures established by the University and the College. Internal and external evaluation letters are required as part of the promotion process.

Faculty should consult with their department head or unit leader by the spring semester before applying to ensure evaluation letters are received in time for the review.

### Multi-Year Contacts

Upon successful completion of four consecutive annual appointments, CIRE faculty receive a two-year contract.

After successfully completing the two-year contract and a cumulative total of six consecutive years of service, faculty become eligible for an initial multi-year contract of three to five years. A promotion and reappointment form must be completed for review before the first multi-year contract.

See the Provost's PTR website and CLAS guidance for current requirements and review procedures.

## Annual Performance Reviews

All faculty receive an annual performance review in accordance with the [collective bargaining agreement](https://hr.media.uconn.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/4047/2026/06/AAUP-CBA-7.1.2025-to-6.30.2029-accessible.pdf). Pre-tenure and annually appointed clinical and in-residence faculty are also reviewed each year for reappointment.

## Questions?

Department heads are the primary resource for questions about promotion, tenure, reappointment, annual reviews, and department-specific expectations. Faculty should also consult the Provost's PTR website and applicable [CLAS guidance](https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CFSKB/pages/28968878082) for current policies, procedures, and timelines.
